FreeFootball Weather Impact
Game-time forecasts for NFL and college football stadiums — wind, gusts, precipitation, temperature and roof type — with a plain-English read on what the conditions may mean for passing, kicking, scoring and ball handling. It explains the weather; it does not pick a side or a total.

Forecast and impact
Choose a game, or a stadium and kickoff time, then check the weather.
Thresholds used: wind 10+ mph WATCH, 15+ mph MATERIAL · gusts 20+ / 30+ mph · precipitation 30%+ · cold ≤32°F / ≤20°F · heat ≥90°F / ≥100°F.
How this is scored
Each area is rated LOW, WATCH or MATERIAL using fixed, public thresholds. The overall rating is the highest area rating. No point values are assigned and no fair total is produced.
- Sustained wind (passing, kicking): under 10 mph LOW · 10–14 WATCH · 15+ MATERIAL (20+ described as strong). Wind is usually the weather factor that matters most.
- Gusts (kicking, deep passing): 20–29 mph WATCH · 30+ MATERIAL.
- Rain (ball handling): 30%+ chance WATCH; heavy rain 60%+ MATERIAL. Light rain by itself is usually less important than high wind.
- Snow / wintry mix: 30%+ WATCH · 60%+ MATERIAL. Thunderstorms: WATCH (wet ball, possible lightning delay).
- Cold (feels-like): ≤32°F WATCH · ≤20°F MATERIAL. Heat: ≥90°F WATCH · ≥100°F MATERIAL.
- Scoring / total environment: MATERIAL when wind or precipitation is MATERIAL, or when wind and precipitation are both WATCH; WATCH when any other factor is present.
- Roof: DOME → weather does not apply. RETRACTABLE → never assumed open or closed: ROOF STATUS UNKNOWN, rated “if the roof is open”.
Data: forecasts from the National Weather Service (api.weather.gov), fetched on our server at the kickoff hour and cached briefly; the hourly forecast covers about 7 days. Venues outside NWS coverage (international games) show WEATHER UNAVAILABLE — nothing is invented. Stadium locations come from a public registry built from Wikidata coordinates cross-checked against Wikipedia; NFL schedule from the public nflverse dataset.

Questions
- Which matters more, wind or rain?
- Usually wind. Sustained wind and strong gusts affect the deep passing game and kicking; light rain on its own tends to matter less.
- Why does a retractable roof say ROOF STATUS UNKNOWN?
- Teams decide on game day. We never assume open or closed, so outdoor weather is shown with the caveat that it only applies if the roof is open.
- How far ahead can I check?
- The National Weather Service hourly forecast reaches about seven days. Forecasts change — check again closer to kickoff.
